BPD Facts

In adults, about 35% of people with BPD will no longer meet criteria for the disorder in two years. In adolescents, the remission rates are even higher; studies estimate that between 66 and 85% of adolescents with BPD will no longer meet diagnostic criteria in two years.



12 percent of men and 28 percent of women in prison have borderline personality disorder.

 

Regardless of gender, people in their 20's are at higher risk of BPD than those older or younger.

Research suggests that men with BPD are more regularly diagnosed with substance abuse problems than women with BPD are.



 

Borderline personality disorder is also known as emotional regulation disorder (ERD)

2% of adults have this disorder.


69% to 75% exhibit self-destructive behaviors such as self-mutilation, chemical dependency, eating disorders and suicide attempts.


8 - 10% die by suicide usually due to lack of impulse control over depression.

Between 40% and 71% of BPD patients report having been sexually abused, usually by a non-caregiver.


Most experts in this field agree that BPD is on the wrong axis code. Presently on Axis II. Should be Axis I.


Most clinicians are either mis-educated or under-educated about ERD and appropriate treatment. Thus people continue to suffer.

 

Severe headaches and migraine appear to be more prevalent in patients with BPD than the general population.


BPD is highly stigmatized in the world.


BPD is virtually unknown to the public.


Studies show inadequate regulation of serotonin, dopamine, and other neurotransmitters in those with BPD.


Discontinuation of medications are high at 50%.


22-35% of domestic violent perpetrators meet the criteria for BPD.
